Snow Days! Can They Really Be Productive Days?

0e5a1a0Days like today are an unexpected break in the routine---a snow day.  I remember the excitement I felt as a kid waking up to snow on the ground and getting the news that school was cancelled.  But today, snow days aren’t quite the same.  With modern tools like VPN and remote desktop, we don’t get the same break we used to.  Nowadays we can be as productive when working from home as working in the office...or can we??  This is when technology can be a blessing and a curse.  Most of us have more internet bandwidth at home than large data-centers had a decade ago.

Let’s face it...working from home has a different dynamic.  You’re not around your co-workers. You can’t walk into a co-worker’s office to quickly collaborate on something or share an issue you’re having. At Nucentric we have 4 employees that work 100% remotely and we use Skype for Business every day to have video calls and share screens. This helps us keep in contact with each other on a more personal level and share what we’re working on with each other in real-time which is a good alternative to being in the same room. This makes them feel more connected to the team.

Why is it for some working from home is effortless and for others it’s a struggle?  With the technology available today, it can be very possible to work as efficiently at home, or on the go, as you do sitting in the office. This is when having the IT support you need can be helpful in preparing your business and your employees for situations, that warrant working remotely, like when traveling, or a snow day, for instance.

How did you choose to get things done this week, once the snow started? Did you find it easy to stay connected to your team and get things done, or was it more of a struggle? Leave your comments below; we would like to hear from you.
